Earn $'s for just selling links on your home page - money for nothing?
Selling links is an easy way to make a few dollars - well, at least it is at first glance. If you have never done it before, the best way is to sign up with a company like Textlinkbrokers or Linkadage and they will inspect your site and market it to companies who are looking to get a one-way link rather than exchange links. All you have to do is to put up a hypertext link to them on a pre-agreed page and you will be sent anything from $5 to hundreds of dollars per link, per month.
The problem with displaying an 'alien' hypertext link is that every hypertext link on your page is a drain away from that page. Although it is not an obvious expense, you are paying real cash for that outgoing hypertext link. So, selling links is not just a plus, it can be a minus too.
OK, apart from that, what's the catch with selling links to other companies? Well, the people who go for these one-way links tend to have an unhealthy obsession with PR and, if your site does not have a PR of at least 5 then you will not even be considered by the link companies.
How does it work and why can't you earn more? Well, the major fly in the ointment is that, although it costs nothing to enrol with a linkbroker like the two named above, they usually take 50% of the amount paid by the linker - in other words, the linker will be charged an average of $40 a month of which the linkbroker will pay you $20. Because of the changes to the award of Page Ranking, it is now very difficult for a private site to get above a page ranking of 6 so there are unlikely to be many internal pages with a PR of 5 and only those and the home page can earn money.
The 'big' money only begins at around PR 8 - a level which it is almost impossible for any non-major corporation site to attain. At PR 5 to PR 6, you can expect to receive about $20 a month per advert. Since you can only display a maximum of 5 or 6 on any page you are never going to get particularly wealthy from this kind of enterprise.
If you are just starting to get a website off the ground and need to generate some cash quickly then by all means consider selling links.
