Affiliate schemes and how they work
An Affiliate Scheme is a good way to bring in additional revenue without doing any extra work.
An affiliate scheme works by your effectively providing free advertising on your site by means of a text link or banner or the like upon which a visitor clicks, is given a cookie to show that they originated from your site and then (hopefully) completes the sale with the new site. The duration of the cookie dictates how long a time period that sale has to be made in. For example, a 30-day cookie means that it doesn't matter if the person buys on their first or tenth visit to the advertiser's site as long as that purchase was made within 30 days.
It costs nothing to sign up for an affiliate scheme - you can either approach individual companies direct or you can subscribe to a service like Tradedoubler or Commission Junction who not only put you in touch with a number of companies who have pre-agreed commission structure and the graphics etc are already there for you to use.
The main advantage of an affiliate scheme arranged through an umbrella company is that it is much less likely that you will be cheated out of commission. Both Tradedoubler and Commission Junction, for example, have elaborate tracking facilities which let them see what pages the visitor goes to and whether a sale is made. You can then study your statistics and see what works and what doesn't - the very key to making money on the internet.
An experienced affiliate website owner will then proceed to monitor the winning graphics, concentrating his or her efforts on focussing on those which make money, ignoring those which do not get clickthroughs or make sales. You need to find out which those are for your site as quickly as possible and then bring to the fore the ones which bring in revenue. Each site is different and a successful affiliate scheme on my site may be a disaster on yours and vice versa. One thing I have noticed, though, is that the graphics which contain a useful table or search facility are far more likely to result in sales than a banner which is almost entirely useless. Next best are links to actual products or services closely followed by text links describing the affiliate.
I am not based in the US so I find Tradedoubler is more effective but I do earn money from Commission Junction too - they certainly have a fascinating range of companies looking to attract you to their affiliate scheme.
The skill in going with this kind of revenue generation is to find both the right and most effective affiliate scheme.
